Forgetfulness, What it is and How we can Improve It!

During my sessions with clients, I am asked about how to improve memory and/or overcome forgetfullness. So I decided to list out some of the many many potential causes of forgetfulness and how we might go about resolving them.

  1. Aging: As we age, our ability to retain and recall information can decline.

  2. Stress and anxiety: High levels of stress and anxiety can make it difficult to concentrate and remember things.

  3. Lack of sleep: Not getting enough sleep can interfere with memory formation and retention.

  4. Medications: Some medications can affect memory, either by causing sedation or by interfering with brain function.

  5. Nutritional deficiencies: A lack of certain vitamins and minerals, such as B vitamins or iron, can affect memory and cognitive function.

  6. Alcohol and drug use: Heavy alcohol or drug use can damage brain cells and interfere with memory.

  7. Head injuries: Traumatic brain injuries can cause long-term memory problems.

  8. Depression: Depression can affect cognitive function, including memory.

  9. Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism, can affect memory.

To resolve forgetfulness, you can try the following:

  1. Get enough sleep: Make sure you’re getting enough sleep each night to help your brain function at its best.

  2. Reduce stress: Try to reduce stress and anxiety in your life through relaxation techniques like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing.

  3. Exercise: Regular exercise can improve cognitive function and memory.

  4. Eat a healthy diet: Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to ensure that your brain is getting the nutrients it needs.

  5. Limit alcohol and drug use: Limit your use of alcohol and drugs to prevent damage to your brain cells.

  6. Manage medical conditions: If you have a medical condition that is affecting your memory, work with your doctor to manage it effectively.

  7. Use memory aids: Use memory aids, such as a calendar, to help you remember important dates and events.

  8. Practice memory techniques: Practice memory techniques, such as association or repetition, to help improve your memory.

  9. Stay mentally active: Engage in mentally stimulating activities, such as puzzles or reading, to keep your brain active and healthy.
